Discover Brest and surroundings by car
With a rich maritime history that goes back centuries, Brest is an important French military port with plenty to explore. Some of the best local attractions easily accessible by car include Océanopolis – one of the world’s top ocean-orientated science and cultural centres – as well as the commercial harbour where you can park up and enjoy a delightful stroll along Quai Commandant Malbert.
While history lovers are likely to appreciate Château de Brest – the oldest building in the city where you’ll find Brest’s fascinating naval museum and the medieval watch tower Tour Tanguy, art lovers can head straight for the Musée des Beaux-Arts featuring work from the post-impressionist Pierre Bonnard. And if you simply want to drive round the city admiring the sites, be sure to head over the cable stayed bridge of Pont de l’Iroise which spans the Élorn River between La Pointe Sainte Barbe and Le Cap.
The great thing about Brest is that it also provides the perfect starting place for an array of other adventures such as a trip to the Armorique Regional Natural Park which is at the heart of Brittany’s cultural heritage. Located less than 30 kilometres south-east of the city, this exciting attraction spreads over 125,000 hectares and with sand dunes, cliffs and forests is the perfect place for a trek.
Continue further south and you’ll also reach one of Brittany’s most-traditional locations, Quimper, where you’ll find everything from quaint timber-framed houses to a sensational 13th century cathedral. Ocean-fresh seafood is popular here and if you’ve a sweet tooth, perhaps pass by one of the many crêpe restaurants in the region.
Driving in Brest
In Brest and throughout the rest of France, people drive on the right and overtake on the left, so keep this in mind if you’re from a country where the rules are reversed.
With plenty of street signs and a network of well-maintained roads, making your way around Brest shouldn’t be too much of a challenge for those used to city driving.
Although traffic can get rather heavy, particularly during the morning and evening commute which usually falls from 7-9am and 5-7pm, there’s ample parking both on-street and in specially designed parking lots. As of 2017, those living in or visiting Brest can also purchase a parking session and space using an app called Whoosh! which has been set up in collaboration with Q-Park.
