Driving in Melbourne
Australians drive on the left hand side of the road and overtake on the right, so take extra care if you’re travelling from a country where these rules are reversed. The CityLink network consists of three tolled roads around the city. It’s possible to pre-purchase a pass from the CityLink website.
As Melbourne has the third largest tram network in the world, most main roads in the city have tram lines so be very careful when you drive around the city. Don’t try to undertake a tram (even if you see locals doing it) as many people park their cars on the left hand side of the road making your manoeuvre difficult.
Like all major cities across the world, traffic is particular heavy from 7-9 in the morning and again from 5-7 in the evening as people commute to and from work. Weekend traffic can also make for a slow journey.
With regards to parking, street bays are hard to come by which is why most people prefer to leave their vehicle in specially designed parking buildings. If you’re driving into the city, aim for Crown Casino where you’ll find reasonable parking rates.
