Discover Melbourne and surroundings by car

With easy access to a hire car, you’ll be well-placed to enjoy the very best of Melbourne and the surrounding area with top attractions including the ever-popular Melbourne Zoo and the Royal Botanic Gardens where you’ll learn more about Australia’s native and endangered plants.

There’s something for everyone in this enchanting part of Australia and while art lovers are sure to appreciate the National Gallery of Victoria, sports fanatics can experience a match in style at the Melbourne Cricket Ground or take a stroll around the National Sports Museum. History buffs, on the other hand, can head to the State Library Victoria or visit the Shrine of Remembrance.

As well as soaking in all the local culture, don’t miss the array of natural beauty spots that are easily accessible by car such as Port Campbell National Park in the south-west district of Victoria. Here, you’ll find the 12 Apostles, a collection of seven, wave-carved rock stacks – six of which can be seen from the main viewing platform within the park. Other highlights here include Loch Ard Gorge shipwreck and London Bridge.

Why not also take a trip to one of the many wine regions located in the area with Yarra Valley being the most well-known. This exciting location is home to a wealth of wineries, restaurants and holiday resorts with guests being able to enjoy a multitude of activities including cycling and ballooning. Yarra Valley is within an hour’s drive of Melbourne and is well-worth the visit.

Driving in Melbourne

Australians drive on the left hand side of the road and overtake on the right, so take extra care if you’re travelling from a country where these rules are reversed. The CityLink network consists of three tolled roads around the city. It’s possible to pre-purchase a pass from the CityLink website.

As Melbourne has the third largest tram network in the world, most main roads in the city have tram lines so be very careful when you drive around the city. Don’t try to undertake a tram (even if you see locals doing it) as many people park their cars on the left hand side of the road making your manoeuvre difficult.

Like all major cities across the world, traffic is particular heavy from 7-9 in the morning and again from 5-7 in the evening as people commute to and from work. Weekend traffic can also make for a slow journey.

With regards to parking, street bays are hard to come by which is why most people prefer to leave their vehicle in specially designed parking buildings. If you’re driving into the city, aim for Crown Casino where you’ll find reasonable parking rates.
