Discover Auckland City and surroundings by car

With a hire car from Europcar, you’ll be geared up to explore some of Auckland’s most exquisite sites from the needle-like Sky Tower which offers views of up to 80 kilometres on a clear day to Waitemata Harbour, perhaps the city’s most dramatic natural feature which divides the city in two.

The Auckland Harbour Bridge – which stretches for more than a kilometre and connects downtown Auckland with the northern districts – is also a sight to behold and makes for a remarkable driving experience. Reaching heights of around 43 metres, the bridge offers spectacular views across Auckland and really is an adventure not to be missed when you’re in the area.

Other hotspots to enjoy include New Zealand’s Maritime Museum, Museum of Transport and Technology, Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens, Auckland Art Gallery, Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium and Albert Park which happens to be the city’s most central green space decorated with a stunningly beautiful Victorian fountain and vibrant flower beds.

If you’re in need of a little downtime, a trip to the east coast is sure to recharge your batteries with Takapuna Beach offering a relaxed atmosphere and providing exquisite vistas over Rangitoto Island across the water. Milford Beach and Cheltenham Beach are both havens of tranquillity with Maraetai Beach being a top spot for families. For a complete change of scenery, why not also make your way to Auckland’s west coast where you’ll discover everything from local surfers to volcanic black sand and the famous Lion Rock?

Auckland is wonderfully diverse, so in order to see all different landscapes, you may also decide to head up north too towards Riverhead Forest – an area of natural beauty located less than 50 kilometres from Auckland city centre.

Driving in Auckland

In New Zealand, you must always drive on the left hand side of the road and overtake on the right. The city of Auckland can get busy especially during the morning and evening rush hours, however, with ample parking it is possible to park-up and walk around the harbour and other attractions.

On-street pay and display parking solutions are popular or you may prefer to leave your car in one of the many enclosed or open-air car parks dotted throughout the city. Remember to check signage and follow all instructions to avoid unnecessary fines. Monthly lease parking is available if you are staying in Auckland for a long period of time.

We are proud to be European leaders in car rental. To find out more about the Europcar car hire experience, be sure to visit our car rental page!
