Other top places of interest within the city that are sure to keep history lovers entertained include, The Amsterdam Dungeon, Madame Tussauds, the Jewish Historical Museum and of course, the Anne Frank House where the brave diarist and her family hid from Nazi persecution for two years. From there you could head to one of Amsterdam’s 30 parks – Vondelpark being the largest – or hop on a boat for a canal cruise. The options are endless.

If you’re in the area for more than a few days, you may even decide to venture further afield. When temperatures rise, locals often flock to the Dutch coast with the beaches at Bloemendaal and Zandvoort being less than an hour’s drive away. Nestled within the countryside are also a host of spectacular old ruins and castles with the fortified town of Muiden being just east of Amsterdam.

Other historic towns within easy reach of the city centre include Haarlem, a picturesque town with monuments dating back some 800 years.

Driving in Amsterdam

Like most countries in Europe, the Dutch drive on the right side of the road. Freeways are very clearly signposted making getting around relatively easy. In and around the city of Amsterdam you should be aware of cyclists – as many people choose to navigate the narrow streets by bike. Also, you must give way to the trams in operation.

When it comes to parking, leaving your car on the outskirts of the city and catching a bus into the centre tends to be the cheapest option. If you want to drive further into the capital, you can park in official street-side parking spaces or city centre garages.
