Discover Florence and surroundings by car

As the capital of Tuscany, Florence is an Italian delight home to a wealth of sensational landmarks that are easy to reach by car. The architecture is impressive here with must-see attractions including Florence Cathedral with its world-famous dome dominating the Florence skyline. The medieval stone bridge of Ponte Vecchio is also remarkable as is the local town hall, Palazzo Vecchio.

The magnificent Uffizi Gallery is well-worth a visit too housing some of the most important works of the Renaissance including pieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Giotto, Botticelli and Michelangelo. From there you could then make your way to the Accademia which houses Michelangelo’s world-renowned statue, David.

Florence is also adorned with green spaces and beautiful parks but if you want to stop and smell the roses, be sure to visit Bardini Gardens well-known for its spectacular array of fragrant flowers and breath-taking views across the city.

With a Europcar vehicle to hand you’ll also have the luxury to explore Tuscany more extensively. To the west of the city lies Pisa where you’ll discover one of Italy’s best-known landmarks, the Leaning Tower. To the north is Bologna home to the Fountain of Neptune and to the north-east is Milan, the global capital of fashion and design. Head north-west for a trip to Venice or Verona and make your way south to Rome which is just less than 300 kilometres from Florence.

Driving in Florence

When in Italy, drive on the right hand side of the road and overtake on the left. Road networks are usually well-maintained but as the historic city centre was not designed with modern day traffic needs in mind, navigating the heart of Florence requires more care.

Florence’s centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which means traffic is limited. ZTL or Limited Traffic Zones prevent mainstream traffic from entering for most of the day. Access is normally allowed during the evening only unless you are a permit holder.

Outside the ZTL areas there are paid parking zones with visitors being required to leave their vehicle in the blue marked spaces and to pay in advance. Private garages are also dotted throughout the city for your convenience.
