Discover Dublin and surroundings by car

Nestled at the mouth of the River Liffey, Southern Ireland’s capital is chock full of things to see and do over the course of your visit – and with a hire car you can tour the area and beyond in your own time. Top attractions undoubtedly include Dublin Castle which dates back to the 13th century and St Patrick’s Cathedral which dominates the city’s skyline.

While history buffs can also make their way to Dublinia – a fascinating museum which delves into medieval history – animal lovers are sure to enjoy Dublin Zoo which is part of the green and spacious Phoenix Park. Want to find out more about the city’s most-renowned export? Then don’t miss a trip to the iconic Guinness Storehouse where you can enjoy an informative tour before heading up to the rooftop bar and sampling the goods.

If you’re in need of a little retail therapy, shoppers won’t be disappointed by Grafton Street which is just a stone’s throw from Trinity College. Here, you’ll find high-end labels as well as an impressive selection of homemade crafts and jewellery. In addition to well-known fashion stores, Dublin is also home to independent stores offering a medley of unique gifts.

As well as exploring Dublin’s vibrant city centre, a hire car will give you the luxury to explore further afield. Head south and you’ll find the old monastic settlement of Glendalough nestled in a valley amid the beautiful Wicklow Mountains. Head north and you’ll also come across delights such as Newgrange, a prehistoric monument dating back to 3200 BC. This burial mound predates Stonehenge and the Egyptian Pyramids and is one of Ireland’s top attractions.

If you want an adventure of a lifetime, be sure to also experience one of the longest and most beautiful coastal routes in the world which stretches more than 2,600 kilometres. The Wild Atlantic Way is renowned for its striking cliffs, stunning beaches and epic bays, winding its way along the Irish west coast from the Inishowen Peninsula in the north down to the picturesque town of Kinsale in County Cork, in the south.

Driving in Dublin

Throughout Dublin and the rest of Ireland, you must stay on the left hand side of the road and overtake on the right. Road networks are usually in good condition and are well signposted although in more rural locations the tracks can be narrower and bumpy.

Traffic within the city centre can become very congested, particularly during the weekly rush hour which tends to occur from 7-9 in the morning and 5-7 in the evening. If you want to avoid inner city traffic, you can use the Inner Orbital Route to get from one side of the city to another without getting stuck in mainstream queues. Signposts for this route are in light blue.

Alternatively, you can use the Outer Orbital Route which links both national and regional roads. Signs for this route are in purple. If you want to avoid the city altogether you can take the M50 Bypass, Dublin Port Tunnel or the East Link Road Bridge. There is a toll for the latter.

With regards to leaving your car, on-street parking is limited and chargeable. If you want to park up and explore the city for an extended period by foot, it’s a good idea to head to one of the off-street parking lots with Q-Park, offering seven car parks in the city centre.
