Discover Berlin and surroundings by car

If you’re eager to discover what the historical city of Berlin has to offer, then make your way to some of the top local attractions including Reichstag – the seat of the German Parliament and one of Germany’s most visited landmarks. While you’re in the area, Museum Island – a UNESCO World Heritage Site consisting of five adjacent museums nestled along the River Spree – is also of great historical interest as is Checkpoint Charlie and is the main entry point for visitors wishing to cross the Iron Curtain to East Berlin during the division of the city.

Other historical places to visit include the Jewish Museum and the Brandenburger Tor, one of Germany’s most-iconic structures, is a must-see too with the surrounding area consisting of shops, glamorous theatres and museums.

The city is also well-placed for a daytrip further afield, and where you go will likely depend on your interests and mood. We also recommend the 30-minute drive to Potsdam – a bustling, waterside city nestled along the Havel. Here, you’ll find Schloss Sanssouci, the largest World Heritage Site in Germany, as well as Babelsberg, the oldest large-scale film studio in the world.

Driving in Berlin

If you’re used to city driving, making your way around Berlin shouldn’t be too difficult as the roads are in good condition and the streets are well signposted. There are many cycle paths running throughout Berlin and beyond, however, so drive with caution and care.

Traffic in Germany stays on the right side and overtakes on the left, so keep this in mind. Seatbelts must be worn and children under 12 should always sit in the back of your vehicle. Only cars with green stickers can enter Germany’s restricted, low-pollution zones.

There is both free and paid parking in the city centre. It is often free to park on the street and if it’s not you will find parking metres nearby. Parking signs are marked with the letter P on a blue sign. There’s also a well-developed network of parking lots where you can leave your vehicle for longer periods of time.
