The Europcar car rental experience in Florence

Florence has three convenient Europcar stations, with a fourth just outside the city. If you are flying into the airport, you can pick up your car rental as soon as you hit the tarmac.

If you are travelling as a couple or small group, a city car will be ideal for your trip, with the Smart Forfour or Fiat Panda being great options. Coming to Italy as a family? Larger models such as the Peugeot 3008 offer more space for a comfortable journey.

Make the most of your time in Florence by picking up your car rental from one station and dropping it off at another if you want to explore further afield in Italy.

Vans are also available, and we offer short- and long-term vehicle rentals.

Driving in Florence

Your US driver’s license is valid for rentals in Italy.

The maximum speed limit is 130 km/h on autostrade (freeways), 110 km/h on main roads, and 90 km/h on secondary roads. In urban areas, the speed limit is set between 50 and 70 km/h, indicated by signs. Speed limits are often lower around populated areas, such as near schools.

In wet weather conditions, the speed limit is reduced to 90 km/h on roads outside built-up areas and 110 km/h on autostrade

In built-up areas, parking is permitted on the right-hand side of roads with two-way traffic. In a one-way street, it is allowed on both sides of the street, but only if there is at least three meters of space left in the road.

Blue road signs and markings indicate paid parking zones. White road markings mean parking time is limited but free. Yellow parking bays are reserved for special vehicles, police, disabled etc. On Sundays and public holidays it is often free to park.

In the center of Florence, there is a ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato) from Monday to Saturday evening. Only residents or permit holders can enter this zone. Be aware that this area is monitored by cameras and you will be fined if you enter without a permit.

Most main roads across Italy are toll autostrade. Toll charges can be paid with cash or credit/debit cards.

Plan your journeys carefully, taking into account that many gas stations in Italy are closed on Sundays. Those that are open on Sundays are often closed on Mondays.

Popular destinations you can reach in about an hour’s drive include Pisa and its leaning tower, Siena with its magnificent piazza and cathedral, and the famous wine region of Chianti.
