Rent a car in Munich with Europcar

Munich might be famed for a certain beer festival, but there is much more to this southern German city than Oktoberfest. With its wealth of green spaces, modern and traditional museums, Bavarian castles and enormous beer gardens, Munich has more than enough to fill a week or even longer.

Choose car rental in Munich to conveniently experience the city as well as the surrounding countryside.

The Europcar rental experience in Munich

Munich has a number of Europcar stations, located across the city in convenient locations, including Munich Airport, the train station, and other downtown branches, so you can choose the pick-up point that suits you best.

Munich car rental comes in all shapes and sizes. For small groups, economy cars are a great choice, with our most popular models including the Audi A1 and Volkswagen Polo. Wanting something bigger? The Volkswagen Passat or Renault Mégane are great for transporting families or larger parties. Vans are also available for transporting heavier loads around the city or nearby.

Europcar means more flexibility, which is why with Europcar Munich you can rent for days, weeks or even months at a time.

Driving in Munich

On German roads, the speed limit on motorways (where limits apply) and highways is 130 km/h, and 100 km/h on other roads.

In Munich, the limit is 50 km/h unless signposted otherwise, and lower in residential areas and around schools.

Parking in the historic center is difficult due to the narrow streets, pedestrianized areas, one-way streets and limited spaces, and is also increasingly expensive. Choosing parking lots or zones outside the downtown area is the easiest option.

There are currently no tolls for cars on German roads.

Discover Munich and the surrounding area by car

Surrounded by scenic countryside and immense castles, Munich is well placed for great day trips to discover more of the region.

The Disney-like Neuschwanstein (75 miles away) is considered one of the most famous German castles. An hour and 40 minutes from Munich, it has spectacular views of lakes and forests.

Majestic vistas and outdoor pursuits abound at Walchensee lake (50 miles), with aquamarine waters surrounded by pine trees and rolling hills in this piece of paradise just an hour from Munich. Enjoy hiking, fishing, boating, sailing and swimming in the lake’s clear waters.

Driving onwards from Munich, discover the medieval town of Rothenburg (145 miles); Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the site of the 1936 Winter Olympics (55 miles, close to the Austrian border); and Salzburg in Austria (90 miles).

Built to celebrate the birth of Bavarian heir to the throne Max Emanuel, the Nymphenburg Palace boasts beautiful gardens and interior design to rival many of the grandest palaces in Europe. Only a portion of the building is open to tourists, but there is plenty to see and do outdoors, including gondola rides on the central canal during the summer months (April to mid-October). Nymphenburg is east of Munich, around a 20-minute drive. There are 450 free parking spaces on site.

The role of Munich in the Nazi movement is remembered at the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. Opened in 1933, Dachau was the first German concentration camp and a model for others across the country. Over 41,500 people were murdered there over a 12-year period. Offering a detailed history of the Third Reich and the social sentiments of the era, Dachau is an evocative site, helping visitors to understand more about this significant moment in European history. There is parking available, free between November and February and €3 per car during the rest of the year.

Things to see in Munich

Munich offers the best of both the past and the present in culture, architecture, and festivals. Of course, thanks to Oktoberfest, beer drinking is a local pastime and can be enjoyed at venues such as the Hirschgarten, which holds up to 8,000 drinkers.

Soak up some culture at the Residenz, with a journey through Bavarian history, or at the modern Museum Brandhorst, where the famous Marilyn Monroe portraits by Andy Warhol reside. Enjoy some fresh air in the expansive Englischer Garten - 900 acres of green space, complete with the Grecian-style Monopteros, a lake for swimming and boating, and of course, its own beer garden.
