Driving in Mannheim

When you rent a car in Mannheim you will need a valid driver’s licence from your country of residence. International driving licences are accepted but not legally required.

Driving in Mannheim, the speed limit is 50 km/h, unless indicated otherwise, and is lower in residential areas and around schools. On motorways and dual carriageways the speed limit is 130 km/h and on other roads it is 100km/h. It is commonly believed that German autobahns have no speed limits, however this is not true and there can be heavy fines for speeding on any road in Germany.

There are no toll charges for private cars on German roads.

Time-limited on-street parking is confined to the city centre, with charges on weekdays. Spaces on the street are limited but there are also several car parks where you can stay for longer. Free parking can be found on the outskirts of the city.

Just half an hour from Mannheim, the neighbouring city of Heidelberg (26 kilometres away) is a great place to visit. With its ruined hilltop castle looking over the riverside city, this is a very romantic European location. Founded in 1386, Heidelberg University is the oldest university in Germany and well worth a visit.

Under two hours from Mannheim by car is Stuttgart (134 kilometres away), a chic city with fancy restaurants and pretty surrounding woodland. Stuttgart is also home to the Schweinemuseum - the biggest pig museum in the world, with all sorts of piggy paraphernalia.

Frankfurt (84 kilometres away) is one hour north of Mannheim by car. Here, a thriving business hub awaits you, with modern shops and dining options, as well as a vibrant nightlife thanks to its university population.

 

Things to see in Mannheim

Described as one of the most active cities in Germany, Mannheim has a wealth of sporting venues, billiard halls, mini golf courses and no less than 83 bowling alleys! The 42-hectare Luisenpark is a great place for families to enjoy the outdoors in the heart of the city. In fact, two thirds of the city is made up of green spaces.

Mannheim is filled with cultural offerings, including the Baroque palace, Barockschloss Mannheim; Schloss Museum; Kunsthalle art gallery; the Technomuseum; and the National Theatre.

The Kunsthalle Museum has recently undergone a lavish refurbishment, with the installment of a new 16,000-square metre exhibition space and roof terrace. This cosmopolitan renovation will see rotating exhibitions join the permanent collection which includes Degas, Monet, Edouard Manet, Francis Bacon and Cézanne. Kunsthalle Museum is near the central railway station and you can use the Wasserturm / CCM underground car park if arriving by car.
