Rent a car in Montpellier with Europcar

Montpellier is one of the most unique cities in the south of France, namely because it is one of the few cities in the country without any Roman or Greek heritage.. Built into hilly terrain on the Mediterranean coast, the 19th century architecture and gothic spires lend a mythical charm to the city.

This coastal city is ideally situated for exploring the south of France, with Marseille to the east and Perpignan and Toulouse to the west.

Driving in Montpellier

In order to rent a car in France with Europcar, you will need a valid EU driver’s licence.

In France, the national speed limits are 130 km/h on motorways, 110 km/h on dual carriageways, 90 km/h on other road types, and 50 km/h in built up areas.

When driving in wet weather conditions, motorway speed limits are reduced by 10 km/h. If your visibility is less than 50 metres in front of you, the speed limit is 50 km/h on all road types.

The city centre is pedestrianised and other central areas can become congested at peak times. It is also worth noting that road signs are quite sparse within the city.

There are six inner-city underground car parks which are open 24/7, however with much of the city pedestrianised, there are also many affordable parking options on the edge of town, from where you can explore the city on foot.

Discover Montpellier and the surrounding area by car

Renting a car in Montpellier enables you to explore this seductive city, as well as giving you the option of getting out into the diverse surrounding regions. An hour to the east you will find the evocative beauty of the Camargue with its shallow salt pans and pink flamingos, while further north is Orange with its dilapidated Roman theatre, cathedrals and monumental archway, listed as world heritage sites.

Just a short drive away from the heart of Montpellier you will find wild windswept beaches; the Plage de l’Espiguette with its sandy dunes and rolling waves is easily accessible, as are the beaches of Sète to the east, with easy parking and good facilities.

If you are driving onwards from Montpellier, Aix en Provence (155 kilometres away) and Marseille (170 kilometres away) are both easily accessible by car, as is Perpignan (177 kilometres to the west, approaching the Spanish border).

If you are travelling with children, a visit to Europark is a must. The largest permanent funfair in France, Europark offers more than 80 attractions over seven hectares, with a 5D experience simulator, rides and rollercoasters, along with funfair games and various restaurants and snack bars. Located less than an hour outside of Montpellier, it is easily accessible by car and there is ample parking on site. Hire a car from Europcar and spend the day having fun with all the family.

The Feria d’Arles is a festival held twice a year, in April and September, to open and close the bullfighting season. It sees the sleepy town transformed into a vibrant fiesta, the streets bussling with crowds as it attracts over 500,000 people each year. Moving orchestras serenade visitors and concerts spring up throughout the cobbled passages. The open air bullfighting rings are still active in Arles and visiting the town during this festive period is a truly unique experience.
