Rent a car in Lahti with Europcar

Historically an industrial city known for its wood and meat industry, Lahti has evolved into a cosmopolitan and welcoming city that deserves to be more popular with visitors than it is. Surrounded by stunning forests and lakes, and boasting high quality, delicious local food and drink, Lahti is a wonderful place to while away a day or two, either as a stand-alone city break or as part of a wider tour of the country.

The Europcar car rental experience in Lahti

Renting a car in Lahti is so simple and convenient with Europcar! We have two rental stations in the city, so you can choose the one that suits you.

The Lahti Railway Station office is located at the main train station, meaning you can reach us easily by train, road or on foot. Our City Rental Station is 3km north of the centre on Lahdenkatu. The nearest bus stop is a 20 minute walk away.

Our flexible car rental offers a whole range of makes and models so you can choose the car to suit your journey. Planning to spend a couple of days exploring Lahti’s charms? The renovated harbour area is a lovely place to enjoy a meal or a drink and admire the view. Our smaller models such as the Audi A3 are ideal for exploring around town.

Fancy heading further into Finnish Lakeland? Stopping off at towns along the way will break up the journey and allow you to immerse yourself in more of the local Finnish culture. Choose the Volkswagen Touran for a comfortable journey and plenty of room for all the family.

And because you can drop off your hire car at a Europcar station close to your destination rather than returning it to where you hired it, if that’s more convenient, your journey is made even easier!

Driving in Lahti

Driving in Finland is on the right, and overtaking to the left. Roads are generally uncongested.

Speed limits vary depending on the road and are usually 50km/h in built-up areas, 100-120km/h on motorways, and a variable limit of between 80 and 100km/h on other roads.

As with most Finnish cities, on-street parking is generally chargeable in the centre – you’ll need to pay at a ticket machine and then display the ticket inside your car. The rate is 1.40 euro / hour. Keep an eye on the time, as fines will be imposed if you outstay your ticket!

Petrol stations are generally plentiful in the more built-up parts of Finland but become scarcer in the north of the country and rural areas, so plan your journey accordingly. Most petrol stations accept credit cards.

Beware of moose, elk and reindeer crossing roads in more rural areas.

Discover Lahti and surroundings by car

One of the lesser known cities in Finland, Lahti is an intriguing blend of city and nature, a place where the urban sits seamlessly alongside the countryside. You could easily just eat and drink your way around the city, enjoying delicious artisan drinks and local produce such as whisky from the Taivaanranta distillery, beer from the Hartwall brewery, and coffee from the Kahiwa Coffee Roastery! But if you’re a music lover, don’t miss a visit to the simply beautiful Sibelius Hall. Named for the famous Finnish composer it is a soaring structure combining brick, wood and glass to stunning effect.

If you’re here for longer and want to get out and about in your hire car, Padasjoki is an hour away and a great base for exploring the Päijänne National Park with its sparkling lakes and dramatic scenery. A boat trip to Kelvenne Island in the middle of the lake is an absolute must – spend the day enjoying the completely unspoilt beach and forests and admiring the view across the crystal clear water. Absolute bliss!

Of course, if cities are more your thing, you can be in the capital Helsinki in an hour and a half, or Turku in just under three hours, or even use your hire car to city-hop all the way around south Finland!
