UK –  B3135 The Cliffs – Cheddar to Oakhill

If you’re searching for a short but spectacular road trip, head to the West Country in your weekend hire car and seek out this treasure trove of steep cliffs, winding roads and awe-inspiring scenery. Just 8 miles east of Weston-Super-Mare and 10 miles south-west of Bristol, Cheddar Gorge and its caves inspire wonder and impress with its highly stacked limestone cliffs, sheer drops and lots of twists and turns. Stop for a visit to the Caves to see the stalagmites and stalactites that surround the preservation chambers of the famous Cheddar Cheese.

France – La Route des Grandes Alpes – Menton to Lac Leman

La Route des Grandes Alpes comprises of 425 miles of spectacular terrain, spanning France from south to north from the French Riviera to Thonon-les-Bains. Riddled with 16 of the highest passes in the Alps, this route certainly isn’t for those afraid of heights as it reaches a jaw-dropping 2,802m above sea level at its highest point and with suitable stopovers, could take you 3 days in your hire car – a perfect road trip to spend your free weekend.

Italy – Stelvio Pass – Bormio to Solda

Though not for the fainthearted, this world-famous drive consists of 75 hairpin bends straddling the Italian/Swiss border and attracts driving enthusiasts from around the world. 26 miles long and 2,700 metres above sea level, this long winding road through the Alps holds a yearly event for cyclists aptly named Stelvio Bike Day where 12,000 cyclist take to the road from Prad, Italy to Val Mustair, Switzerland – a route that’s perfect for any weekend road trip by hire car.
