A staycation in the UK this year seems more and more likely for many of us while we continue to wait for the countries on our bucket list to become accessible.

So why not stay at home instead of traveling the world? The UK has some fantastic destinations to offer that feel just like you’re on a foreign holiday.

Here’s a selection of UK locations with international appeal, whether you’re looking for a quiet getaway with your other half or a family holiday with the kids.

Cornwall or Italy?

With its outstanding beauty and a sprinkling of picturesque villages, Cornwall is a serious contender for the Italian Amalfi Coast. On a warm, sunny English summer day you can lie back on your sun lounger on a Cornish beach and imagine you’re in this dazzling part of the Mediterranean. The landscapes are similar, with dramatic hillsides rolling down to white sandy beaches. The hidden Cornish coves are a delight to explore with the kids, and just as inviting as the inlets and caverns of Amalfi. You can almost smell the scent of lemons on the breeze…

Swap the Italian Lakes for the Lake District

Immerse yourself in the magnificent beauty of Lake Windermere or Lake Ullswater, which are on a par with the astounding scenery of Lake Como or Lake Garda. If you enjoy walking and getting close to nature, then this UNESCO World Heritage Site has plenty to offer. Crystal clear waters surrounded by imposing mountains and breath-taking countryside the Lake District is one of the most stunning beauty spots in the UK.

London vs. New York

With its trendy restaurants, fantastic architecture and parks in the heart of the city, London easily rivals New York as a staycation destination. Swap New York’s taxis for London’s black cabs, Macy’s for Harrods or Harvey Nichols and Broadway for the West End and you’ll find plenty to keep the whole family entertained. You’ll find a Starbucks on every main street for a quick skinny latte refuel before you continue your exploration of the UK fascinating capital city.

The Jurassic Coast or Chesapeake Bay?

Let’s be honest, will your kids care if they’re fossil hunting in the UK or the US? You don´t need to go to the expense and jet lag of visiting the US when you’ve got the amazing Jurassic Coast in Dorset on your doorstep. With 95 miles of dramatic coastline, towering cliffs, ancient castles and country pubs to explore, this stunning part of the UK rivals Chesapeake Bay any day.

Compare the spectacular castles of the UK with the castles of Europe

The UK boasts a fabulous selection of historic castles to visit that are just as incredible as those in Europe. For a journey into the history of the UK why not visit Warwick Castle in the Midlands, St. Michael’s Mount in Cornwall, Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, or the Queen’s home Windsor Castle in the south? Each has its own magical story to tell of days gone by, dramatic battles and the defence of the UK. Just as impressive as any French chateau of the Loire Valley or Dracula’s castle in Transylvania, there are so many castles to visit in the UK.

Are you in Norfolk or the Netherlands?

Who needs tulips from Amsterdam when you’ve got a landscape brimming with these beautiful flowers in Norfolk? This quiet and picturesque county in the east of the UK boasts windmills, canals, longboats and some delicious British cuisine. If you enjoy cycling and exploring at your own pace, then Norfolk is the place to visit. With its flat empty roads, cycle trails and miles of open countryside you could easily be in the Netherlands.

The Peak District – the ‘little Switzerland’ of the UK

Just as breath-taking as the Swiss Alps, the Peak District is one of the most beautiful parts of rural England. This stunning national park lies south-east of Manchester and offers plenty to discover – caves, walking trails, quaint villages, ridges to climb, tors to scale and even a Swiss-inspired cable car at Matlock Bath. The kids will love snowball fights and sledging if you visit in the winter, while a spring or summer trip is perfect for a family picnic.

Devon – the alternative to Italy

Known as the ‘English Riviera’ Devon is as stunningly beautiful as the coastlines of Italy, Spain or Portugal. With gorgeous beaches, miles of unspoilt countryside and a vast range of Italian restaurants to dine on pizza and pasta, Devon is the ultimate alternative European coastal experience.

The UK has so many diverse and awesome destinations to choose from. A staycation has never been so appealing!
