Good to know

Visit Pego do Inferno waterfall

A well-kept secret, Pego do Inferno (Hell’s Pool) is a hidden waterfall in Tavira, just over half an hour from Faro centre. Named so due to a legend of a carriage that once fell in and was never recovered, locals said that anyone falling in the waters would go to hell. Once you arrive at the site, there is a walk to the waterfall. To refuel there is a small café at Pego do Inferno. This unique Faro attraction isn’t accessible without the help of a hire car.

Things to see in Faro

With bars playing live music, homely Portuguese tavernas, organic vegetarian restaurants, and pastelarias (bakeries) serving up those classic custard tarts, Faro knows how to eat and drink well. For sightseeing, there are two masterpieces. The Sé, completed in 1251 but rebuilt following the earthquake of 1755. What is left is a mix of Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque features, plus some great views of the coast from the top. The double-toured Baroque church is noted for its fancy white and yellow facade and the Capela dos Ossos that lives within. Translating as Chapel of Bones, it is entirely made from the skull and bones of more than 1,000 Carmelite monks. Creepy, but mind-blowing.

Visit the Municipal Museum

Faro’s city museum offers a glimpse at the past with its huge collection of treasures. Housed inside an impressive 16th century Renaissance building, visitors will see everything from 3rd century mosaics to domestic Islamic artefacts dating back to the 9th century. Works by local notable artist, Carlos Filipe Porfírio, are also on display, along with large rocks and plinths. Discover it all when you hire a car in Faro.
