Discover Malaga and surroundings by car

Known as the capital of the Costa del Sol, Malaga is renowned for its sensational beaches – and with a hire car, you can cruise along the coastline at your leisure. While Playa Malagueta is just a ten minute walk from the port you can also head a little further eastwards along the coast to Playa Caleta or Nerja – a charming ex-fishing village which still maintains its traditional ambiance.

Marbella is of course a hit with tourists thanks to its golden sands and lively nightlife, but if a quiet place to soak up the sun is what you need, Estepona is one of the quaintest and most picturesque towns on Malaga’s coastline. For some of the best beaches in the Malaga province, you could also head out along the south coast to Torremolinos.

As well as swimming in the clear blue sea and catching some rays, how about also exploring Malaga’s historic side? La Alcazaba is a valuable Moorish fortress from Spain’s Islamic rule with an ancient Roman theatre located just beyond the outer walls. Malaga’s towering cathedral – which took over 150 years to build – is also a sight to behold and then there’s Castillo de Gibralfaro – a hilltop fortress which looms over the city.

If you want to plan a road trip, a slow drive north to the capital of Madrid is perfectly doable or you may decide to pop over the border to Portugal!

Driving in Malaga

The Spanish drive on the right hand side of the road, so keep this in mind as you navigate the culturally rich city of Malaga. Roads are generally well-maintained and signposted throughout the city making navigation relatively simple. The city centre is often very busy, so you may wish to park up on the outskirts and make use of the various Metro lines which operate daily.

If you want to tour Spain more extensively, it’s also worth knowing that the country’s main road network is divided up into carreteras nacionales (toll-free national roads), autovías (toll-free dual carriageways) and autopistas (toll motorways).

With regards to parking, finding a space can be a problem. There are blue zones for on-street parking, but these are limited and chargeable. Unlimited parking is set to specific secured car parks in the city centre. Again, these are well-signposted.

Getting to know Malaga

Whether you’re a chilled out sardine eating vacationer or an intrepid coastal explorer, you can explore the side of Malaga that suits you best with a car rental from Europcar Malaga Airport. Choose a vehicle online and all you need to concentrate on is where to head first!

Magnificent Malaga attractions

When in Malaga, there are plenty of attractions that shouldn't be missed from the Costa del Sol beaches to the historical sites of interest such as La Alcazaba – an old Moorish fortress. The remains of an ancient Roman amphitheatre also shed light on times gone by, so go ahead and explore until your heart’s content.
